Fireworks Staffordshire, or Staffs for short, covers a county in the midlands of England. Staffordshire’s county town is Stafford and the largest city is Stoke-on-Trent. The only other city in Staffordshire is Lichfield but major towns include Burton upon Tent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Cannock and Tamworth. The county is split into a number of districts. These are; Cannock Chase, Lichfield, East Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, South Staffordshire, Tamworth, Staffordshire Moorlands and the Borough of Stafford. Staffordshire is also the name of a well known breed of dog – the Staffordshire bull terrier – which was bred in the county for hunting purposes.
Stoke on Trent is often known as “The Potteries” as it is considered to be the home of the English pottery industry. Part of the reason for this is that well known companies like Royal Doulton and Wedgwood were started / based there.
Lichfield, Staffordshire’s other city, is relatively small with a population of just twenty eight thousand. Brewing used to be the major industry in the area. Lichfield is the site of the only medieval cathedral in England that has three spires.
Newcastle-under-Lyme is a market town in North Staffordshire with a population of around 74,000. The town is part of a world-wide network of cities and towns with the name Newcastle.
Cannock is situated on the M6 toll road and is about eight miles south of Stafford – the county town of Staffordshire. Stafford is also the name of knot which can be seen on the coat of arms of the Stafford family.
